Connect with SSH
Sign in to your Linux server from a terminal using a password or SSH key.
Before you connect
Wait for deployment to finish. In the cloud console, open your server and copy its public IP and Overview → Server Information → Username.
Have your deployment password or matching private SSH key ready. Serverside.com cannot retrieve your deployment password or private key.
Connect
Open PowerShell on Windows, or Terminal on macOS/Linux. Run one of these commands on your computer, replacing the placeholders:
With a password:
ssh YOUR_USERNAME@YOUR_SERVER_IP
With a private key:
ssh -i "PATH_TO_PRIVATE_KEY" YOUR_USERNAME@YOUR_SERVER_IP
Use the private key file, not its .pub file. The matching public key must be installed for that user, for example by selecting it during deployment. Manage SSH keys.
SSH uses port 22. For a custom port, add -p PORT to either command.
If ssh is unavailable, install an OpenSSH client. On Windows, use Optional Features → OpenSSH Client.
Enter your server password or private-key passphrase when prompted. Password input is hidden. After signing in, commands run on the server.
Run exit to disconnect. Use tmux or a service for work that must continue after the session closes.
Troubleshooting
| Error | Check |
|---|---|
| Connection timed out or refused | Server power, IP, port, firewall rules, and whether SSH is running. |
| Permission denied | Username, password, or the private key matching the installed public key. Password login may be disabled. |
| Lost password or private key | Contact support about recovery options. |
Include the server identifier and exact error when asking for help. Never send a password or private key.
